Modra Vineyards

The vineyards in Modra belonging to ELESKO are spread along the southeast-facing slopes of the Little Carpathians and form part of the Malokarpatská wine-growing region. The soil in this area is mainly brown earth mixed with gravel particles. This location and soil structure is suitable for growing noble grape varieties and producing wines of a high quality such as Sauvignon and Riesling.

On an upland plateau a stone’s throw from Modra, near the village of Vištuk, on largely level terrain, visitors can admire the Fajdal estate vineyards. The vineyards are planted on brown earth that is well-suited to growing aromatic white and red grapes. ELESKO planted its first 50 ha of new vineyards in autumn 2005 and planted additional vineyards in the following years to reach its current planted area of 110 ha.

The firm chose the varieties to plant in its vineyards according to the characteristics of the climate and soil, taking into consideration local traditions. As well as choosing suitable varieties, the firm chose high quality clones and root stock for each variety, in order to grow grapes of the best quality. Furthermore, integrated production is used in all our vineyards, which is less harmful to the environment and minimises the use of chemicals in favour of biological protection and protection of the environment. Wine made from such grapes is an “eco” product, which significantly increases its quality.

ELESKO always uses the most modern techniques for planting, which gives its vineyards a quality and appearance that is unique in Slovakia.

Every vineyard that we plant was blessed by the parish priest to ensure that it prospers and its grapes produce the best wine. Each vineyard receives a name when it is blessed. The first and largest is called ZOYA, the second IVETA, the third MÁRIA. The smallest, most beautiful vineyard, which we like the best, winds around the winery and is called LITTLE ZOYA.

One of the main varieties grown is Chardonnay, one of the Burgundy family of vines. Vines of this family have traditionally prospered in this region and produce wines with strong fruits that are very popular with wine lovers. Another common variety is Pinot Gris, which has become a speciality of the firm, adding tones of overripe tropical fruit and yellow melons. Palava, from which we make excellent naturally sweet select wines and straw wines. Spicy Traminers provide hints of rose fragrances and Rhine Rieslings, which the firm processes in untraditional ways, produce wines with the aroma of lime trees, honey, camomile but above all crisp acids.
From red wine grapes, we chose the traditional Blaufränkisch variety, for which the soil conditions are ideal, and the increasingly popular Pinot Noir with mild fruit tones.
We also planted regional varieties like Alibernet, which produces a robust, dark red wine with great potential for long-term maturing in bottles. Another variety is the famous new Slovak variety Dunaj, which achieves high sugar content in the grapes, an intense colour and wine with a pleasant chocolate taste. ELESKO has the largest planting of this variety in Slovakia.
As an experiment the firm has also planted the traditional global variety Merlot, and in this location it has achieved excellent growing characteristics which have added a beautifully structured fruity wine to the world of Slovak wines. We use this variety to make red straw wines with prune and chocolate flavours.

Come and see our vineyards for yourself and put to the test our promise of a peaceful atmosphere and beautiful vines under the Little Carpathians.
